The Wai Ora Fund for 2016-2017 is now open for applications.

Wai Ora was established five years ago to assist Māori individuals and organisations develop expertise in freshwater and advance Māori interests in freshwater fisheries. It has been accessed by iwi and other Māori organisations to, for example, help restore waterways and rivers, as well as improve habitats for freshwater fisheries, such as tuna, to grow, thrive and survive.

Under the Māori Fisheries Act 2004, individual Māori, Mandated Iwi Organisations, Recognised Iwi Organisations and other Māori organisations are eligible to apply for to the Wai Ora fund.  Te Wai Māori encourages applicants to apply for funding up to a maximum of $70,000 for a project.
