Lead commercial, cultural, spiritual and social responsibilities whilst providing strategic leadership and direction, strengthening and enhancing core assets, and actively managing growth and portfolio diversity.

The Chief Executive Officer is responsible for increasing the participation and achievement levels of Te Rūnanga Nui O Te Aupōuri and its people; and is committed to its commercial, cultural, spiritual and social responsibilities. This includes developing and implementing appropriate strategies, building and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders in the Māori, Government and Private communities, and providing leadership and guidance to the Rūnanga managers and staff.

Charged with the development of an engagement plan that identifies key Māori-aligned organisations, you will be accountable for key deliverables, and for increasing Rūnanga capacity to meet its responsibilities, obligations and compliance.

Optimising the Rūnanga contribution to whānui, you will identify requirements and opportunities, providing leadership and facilitation of opportunities to grow Rūnanga across cultural, social, commercial and spiritual arenas.  Accountable for the development and management of strategies and business plans with the objective of increasing participation and engagement of iwi you will facilitate the development of the strategic plan and associated business plans, which align with Rūnanga objectives, in conjunction with sector stakeholders and its subsidiaries.

Providing leadership and direction, you will strive to both strengthen and enhance the Trust’s core assets, actively managing growth and diversifying the business portfolio.  You will have a collaborative relationship with the Trust’s commercial development company.

Reporting to the chairperson of the Board, this position works in partnership with the Board, and is accountable for the overall organisational success. With superior financial acumen, the ability to manage risk; and the means to formulate a plan of action and execute swiftly and decisively, your career will have been founded on a proven track record of both strategic and operational contribution to the organisations you have led.

Overseeing the day to day service operations and functions, you will display the mana and cultural competency required to strengthen existing strategic partnerships and stakeholders both internally and externally.  Embracing risk in leading transformative change, you will able to find a natural balance to ensure sustainability of the business, via your financial diagnostic abilities to analyse, monitor and risk assess, and plan for a sustainable and profitable future pathway.

Criteria, skills knowledge and experience should include; 

  • Extensive experience in a similar, senior position, as a CEO, business owner or the like is required.
  • Prior skills in strategic and financial planning, the production of annual budgets, forecasting and risk    analysis.
  • Clear evidence of increased profitability and diversification of assets.
  • The ability to provide oversight of day to day operational management, planning, reporting, financial    and staff management.
  • Skilled in pastoral, organisational care.
  • Hands on leadership management, judgement, communication and relationship management skills.
  • Exceptional financial acumen and project management experience.
  • Proven track record of exceeding contract deliverables.
  • A solid track record in operational management and demonstrated leadership experience with change.
  • The established ability as a people influencer and people leader.
  • The prior demonstration of establishing, maintaining and enhancing key strategic partnerships.
  • Skilled in operational and strategic management.

An awareness of and an affinity for the needs and aspirations of rural, remote Māori communities; competency in Te Reo me ona tikanga is required to perform the position.
